What degree(s) do you hold? From what school(s)? What was your area of concentration?

BA in Plan II & BA Spanish from University of Texas at Austin, MA in World History from Columbia University, MSc in World History from the London School of Economics

What is your previous work experience?

I taught ninth grade World Geography at YES Prep (a charter school in Houston); Ancient, Medieval and Modern World History and an elective in World Religions at Trinity Valley School in Ft Worth (to 9th-12th graders); Modern World History and Literature to 11th graders at The Regents of school of Austin. I have also taught English in China and to Sudanese refugees in Egypt. I love introducing students to what life is and was like in other parts of the world in order for them to better understand the bigness of our Lord who is creator and father to all humans across time and across the globe.

Please tell us about your family:

I’ve been married to my husband, Matt for 7 years. He is a PhD candidate in ancient philosophy at UT (where we met as undergrads almost 13 years ago). We’ve had three children since he started his PhD program in 2016. I adore my husband and kids and can’t think of anything I’d rather do than get outside and explore nature with them. We love hiking, fishing and going on family runs.

What do you love about Classical education?

I love that Classical education integrates all subjects and focuses on teaching students how to think well and recognize and pursue all that is true, good and beautiful. I am excited to be able to teach students in a way that encourages the development of their whole selves (spiritual and intellectual) and encourages a lifelong love of learning.

Why are you interested in teaching in at Austin Classical School? What do you love about students in the grade you’re teaching?

With three young chikdren of my own, I am excited about an opportunity to both pursue my love of teaching and have significant time at home with my family. 8th and 9th graders are so fun to teach because they are still pretty inquisitive but also have the ability to think and produce arguments on a high level. They are also hilarious. In my spare time, I enjoy being active- especially running, doing yoga and going on hikes with my family. I also cherish quiet alone time to read and pray. I enjoy reading books about history, spirituality, philosophy as well as good fiction. When I’m not with my family or enjoying some rare alone time, I love getting together with friends.

What do you hope your students will learn from you this year?

I hope to help guide my students to a better understanding of the unity and diversity that have characterized human cultures across time and space (as we all reflect God’s image as well as His creativity) and equip them with the skills they need to talk and write about history and literature with clarity and precision.
