Solomon and the Ant: Authors’ Brunch

Composition & Literature for our Second Graders this year has included the study of a wonderful text of rich and beautiful Jewish folktales: Solomon and the Ant

Over the course of the semester, the students used this text as a basis for their copy work, as well as a source of new vocabulary words. After reading through a few selected pieces, they were given the opportunity to retell one of the tales in their own words. The only catch? They had to make it Christmas-themed.

Some students updated their fables to present-day, and chose to include some of their classmates as characters. Others decided to set it in Bethlehem at the time of Jesus’ birth. Duri ng our campus Christmas celebrations this season, the classes hosted an Authors’ Brunch, featuring the retelling of their stories. Parents and siblings attended, and even helped display the accompanying illustrations.

After all of the authors had shared their stories, they treated the audience to a special presentation of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”, complete with sign language. It was a great morning spent celebrating all of the wonderful facets of the season.
