Sandra Burnaman (Choir)
What degree(s) do you hold? From what school(s)? What was your area of concentration?
Bachelor of Church Music Cum Laude, Major in Voice, Minor in Organ (Singapore Bible College) Master of Music, Major in Music Education (Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary)
What is your previous work experience?
Prior to teaching at ACS, I was an adjunct at Hutson-Tillotson University teaching Class Piano. I was also the K-3rd Grades Music Teacher (Regents School of Austin). I’ve taught children, youth and adult choirs in churches both in Singapore and in Texas. I have also been teaching private piano and voice lessons for over 25 years.
Tell us a little about your family:
I am originally from Singapore. My husband, Stephen and I have been married for 14 years and we have one son. As a mom, I love seeing how my son has grown spiritually, intellectually and socially over the years. It is scary but yet rewarding to know that my role to nurture him to become a godly man has allowed me to learn more about myself.
What do you enjoy about Classical education?
The classical education provides a wonderful well-rounded education. I am excited to be teaching in a classical Christian school because I get to teach in a Christian worldview and culture where God is viewed as the Creator of all things true, beautiful and good. Music is all of that and what an incredible opportunity for me to bring music to the hearts of the children in this school.
Why are you interested in teaching in at Austin Classical School? What do you love about students in the grade you’re teaching?
I am teaching Pre-K to 5th Grades music and choir. I am glad that I can teach in a Christian Classical school that would have God in its core curriculum. It is important to begin learning music in Grammar school as they get to learn the facts but also get to play and experience music through singing, dancing, acting and playing instruments. I love that I can be part of the team and make that happen for the students at ACS.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love to read for leisure usually right before I go to bed. Terri Blackstock is one of my favorite Christian fiction authors. Historical and mystery books are my favorite kind of books to read. I also like to knit in my spare time.
What do you hope your students will learn from you this year?
This year I hope my students would get to experience the wonder of making beautiful music to the Lord.
