As this school year comes to an end, we can all celebrate the closing of a challenging season. However, it may have contained some enjoyable moments for you and your family as well, as you spent time learning at home together. And while you may not see yourself full-time homeschooling forever, you might be drawn to something that offers a homeschool component with a little more structure.

At Austin Classical School, we aim to provide just that: collaborative learning that combines the best of the classroom and the home. We partner classroom teachers with co-teaching parents in our Classical, Christian model.

Our students are on campus 2-3 days a week, learning alongside peers and experiencing life in community. The remainder of the weekdays are spent learning at home with a co-teaching parent, as they work through well-constructed lesson plans provided by classroom teachers.

Find out more about our collaborative model here. We’d love to talk with you more about Austin Classical School!

Take a deep breath, Mustangs: the end of the year is here and you made it! We even had actual snow in Austin this year. We pray that each of you is slowing down professionally, personally and as a family. We thank God for what He has done, and continues to do, in and through ACS this year.

Who says memory work can’t be fun? For our Grammar students, we try to incorporate songs and jingles whenever possible to help keep our memory work exciting. This year, through our study of ancient history, we’ve been able to incorporate so many stories from God’s word. One special treat that our Second graders had for us today was their presentation of the genealogy of Jesus…set to a quite catchy tune, thanks to the musical stylings of Andrew Peterson.

Every year as the Christmas season comes around, we make a few changes to our Chapel time. We sing through various carols, which our students always enjoy. Later this month, several of our more musically-inclined parents will perform a brief concert during our time together in the morning. And instead of our normal closing doxology, we say a Christmas prayer. What a wonderful way to start the day!

May we be filled with the wonder of Mary,
the obedience of Joseph,
the joy of the angels,
the eagerness of the shepherds,
the determination of the magi,
and the peace of the Christ child.
May the Father, the Son and
the Holy Spirit bless us now and forever.
Amen.

That’s what we were reminded about in Chapel this morning, as we entered into the final month of our school year. Though the finish line is just ahead, we need to remember that we are still called to finish well.

Our Head of School, Mrs. Dusty Kinslow, referenced Colossians 3:23-24 as she encouraged our students to finish well. “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.”

What a great verse to get us through these last few weeks! Our students were also reminded of the principles that we choose to abide by at Austin Classical School. One way we can *all* finish well is to keep these in mind, as we work heartily for the Lord.

Finish well, friends, and keep READing!

We’ve got plants, fish, caterpillars, and as of Monday: baby chicks!

Our 3rd graders became proud parents of almost a dozen chicks this past week, and they couldn’t be more excited. They have been waiting patiently for weeks, and finally got to see their brood arrive.

Keeping in line with our study of the Modern Era, they chose to name these chicks after U.S. Presidents and First Ladies. Eleanor “Ellie” Roosevelt was the first to arrive, proving to be a welcome distraction during a math test.

There’s something captivating about not only watching new life, but watching it through the eyes of a child. Whether it’s the squeal of a Kindergartner as she sees her plant grow its first leaf, or the wonder of a 1st grader watching a fish dart around the aquarium, our students really are experiencing truth, goodness and beauty in their classrooms. The chicks just happen to be the loudest expression of those virtues.

It’s hard to believe that we’re in the middle of Summer already! Although planning for next year is already underway, it’s hard to keep from reflecting on all of the amazing things that we accomplished this past year.

As a school, we learned history from Columbus to Peter the Great. We learned to read and write and grow fish and reduce fractions and Latin noun declensions. We learned that God gives us our daily bread and that Martin Luther wrote a Mighty Fortress is our God. We learned to respect authority and to take responsibility. We sculpted soap like Donatello and played fun games in PE. We learned to be good friends, to say that we’re sorry and to think of others before we think of ourselves.

We learned so much, but the most important things we learned were about God. His fingerprints were on everything we learned because He’s sovereign over all of it AND because He is infinitely discoverable.

In light of all of those truly amazing things, I wanted to spend some time this summer reflecting on what we learned about God. And I think our best chance for summing it up is found in these three sentences.

We learned that God is True. He is True to His Word which we hid in our hearts. As many of us heard countless times this year, James 1 still rings true:

“Consider it pure joy when we do bar models or number bonds of many kinds?”

“If any of you lacks wisdom about Latin let her ask God who gives generously.”

“Let no mom say she is being tempted by God to drink before 10am, because God tempts no one.”

And, my personal favorite: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above- yes, even your children.”

His Word is True and He is True to His word. He does give joy when we seek Him no matter the circumstance. He does give wisdom when we have nothing. He does lead us from temptation. He does send good and perfect gifts when we least deserve and if we’ll only open our eyes. He is True. And we are grateful.

Next, we learned that God is good. He is so very, very good. He never runs out. His grace is sufficient. He loves beyond measure. He gives abundantly. He never sleeps and never slumbers. His eyes are on us. He delights in us. He sings over us. He listens when we pray. He comforts when we’re down. He stoops low to lift us up. His Kingdom is an upside down Kingdom where wrongs are righted and slaves are set free and sick are healed and old is made new. He’s so good. And we are grateful.

Lastly, we learned that God is beautiful. So very lovely. His creation. The many faces of ACS. How He inspires writers to write and artists to create and musicians to play and teachers to teach and neighbors to give and friendships to deepen. It’s just beautiful.

Our God is True. Our God is Good. And our God is Beautiful. And, oh, how we love Him here at ACS.

I look forward to sharing some more thoughts with you as we continue to enjoy this Summer season and prepare for our new school year to start this Fall!

The post Lessons on God first appeared on Austin Classical School | Austin, TX.
