Five-time Olympian Amy Acuff (1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012) came to speak to our Track & Field athletes last Thursday. She shared about her high jump career (personal best of 6’7″) and encouraged our athletes to pursue excellence as well as an active and healthy lifestyle. She also held a high jump clinic with our high jumpers. We are grateful for the opportunity to be inspired by a world-class athlete!

Additionally, our Track & Field athletes had a great showing at their first set of meets this season! The Mustang team spirit was strong, and many medals and ribbons were won! In addition, our 5th/6th girls won our first-ever Track & Field trophy for ACS by placing 2nd in Team Overall in their division!

2021 has been a year of firsts for us! This was our first year to participate in the Austin Regional Science Fair, as well as National History Day. We recently learned that some of our Grammar and Upper School students placed in both of those academic competitions.

In the National History Day – Central Texas competition, students were required to research and present a topic of their choosing, within a historical theme. This year’s NHD theme is “Communication in History: The Key to Understanding.”

Our 9th Grade girls brought home 1st Place (Senior Division) with their exhibit: The Power of Protest Music.

Several of our Upper School boys won 1st Place (Junior Division) for their website Chernobyl: Communication Meltdown

These students’ entries will now move on to the state competition.

Several of our students who won their grade-level competition in the ACS science fair in December moved on to compete in the Austin Regional Science Fair.

While much of Texas is now in recovery mode from our recent winter storm, the Austin Classical School community is no different. Please read the note below from our Executive Director, Cici Scott, as she provides an update about our campus in light of the damage from last week.

Dear ACS Community,

I remember on New Year’s Eve thinking how glad I was that 2020 was in the rearview mirror. Well, now I’m second-guessing that thought, wondering if we jumped from the frying pan into the fire! 2021 has already been a doozy in too many ways.

When we canceled the rest of the school week last Monday, I don’t think any of us realized what a wild week we had in store. As a leadership team, we unanimously felt led to relieve pressure on teachers and co-teachers in the face of a historic – and lingering – winter storm. I’m grateful that we listened to that prompting because this has been a rough one, to say the least. I’m guessing that if you didn’t lose power or water, you likely had people staying with you who did. Many of us have been relying on the kindness and hospitality of friends since Monday.

Today, I was reminded of a framed prayer I have hanging on my office wall, one that I love from Elisabeth Elliot. It reads, “Teach me to treat all that comes to me with peace of soul and with firm conviction that your will governs all.” Well, that prayer was on my heart as I raced to the school on Thursday after receiving a text telling me that water lines had broken in the church building.

Long story short, broken water pipes flooded the first floor of all three buildings on the Great Hills campus. I arrived to find a few inches of standing water throughout the atrium, lower Grammar hallway, and classrooms, as well as the Admin hallway (where our front office is located). It’s definitely in the disaster category, but I was thankful it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. Gratefully, there is no water damage to the second and third floors of our building or to the sanctuary.

God has continued to abundantly provide for our school through a dear friend of ACS who owns a roofing and water damage restoration company. Brad Farr has served our school in countless, practical ways over the past few years. We called Brad on the way to campus, and he met us at the church. Brad did the initial assessment of the damage and immediately got a crew to begin removing the standing water. There is a lot of cleanout to do over the coming days, but God is so good to already have people in place to help us.

I confess this was not how I thought next week would go. I was looking forward to getting back to school, but God continues to use the difficult circumstances of the past year to teach me to trust Him in ALL things, even unwelcome things. Our God is good, all the time, and we can treat the current unwelcome circumstances with peace of soul and with firm conviction that His will governs all.

With stubborn joy,

Cici

In light of the damage and clean-up operations, we will be operating remotely for the coming week. We are incredibly thankful for the outpouring of support from our faculty, staff, and community. Some pictures from campus are below:

During our study of light, the Kindergarten class took things up a notch and decided to put on a Shadow Puppet Theater. This was an opportunity to see light at work, and be a little creative at the same time. The students had a wonderful time making their puppets, putting together the stories, and then performing for their audience. What a great way to see science in action!

Our wonderful teachers get to dress up like they are 100 years old, and our students get to do all kinds of “100-themed” things today: a scavenger hunt for 100 blocks around campus, making hats with 100 stickers, stacking 100 cups in a tower, guessing which jar has 100 items, and well, about 100 other fun things!

Have a great day counting, Kindergarten!

The post 100 days of school! first appeared on Austin Classical School | Austin, TX.

Our study of history is broken up into 4 distinct parts, which we rotate through every 4 years: Ancient Times, Middle Ages, Early Modern Times, and the Modern Age. This year, we are working our way through Ancient Times, studying the beginnings of civilization in the Fertile Crescent, learning about simple machines used in Ancient Egypt, and brushing up on some of Greek and Roman mythology.

As part of our studies of Ancient Egypt, our students were able to get some hands-on experience with mummification. Each grade entombed their own “mummy” (aka a specimen from the poultry section of the local grocery store), following a process that spanned about 40 days.

Mummies were named, wrapped with care (including some special jewels and ornamentation), and then finally laid to rest in a campus-wide ceremony. Much like the Ancient Egyptians would have done, the burial was attended by the entire community, as they mourned loudly and shepherded their mummies into the afterlife.

Rest in peace, mummies of ACS. You will be remembered fondly.

King Cluck-n-Raw of 5th and 6th Grade
