Every year as the Christmas season comes around, we make a few changes to our Chapel time. We sing through various carols, which our students always enjoy. Later this month, several of our more musically-inclined parents will perform a brief concert during our time together in the morning. And instead of our normal closing doxology, we say a Christmas prayer. What a wonderful way to start the day!

May we be filled with the wonder of Mary,
the obedience of Joseph,
the joy of the angels,
the eagerness of the shepherds,
the determination of the magi,
and the peace of the Christ child.
May the Father, the Son and
the Holy Spirit bless us now and forever.
Amen.

An important part of life at Austin Classical is the experience of the co-teaching parents. To help make their role successful, we provide several opportunities throughout the year for training. We always start each school year with a few packed days of co-teacher training (with plenty of fun mixed in), so that we can all start the year off right.

Then as the school year progresses, we check in with them each quarter to provide encouragement, see how things are going on homeschool days, and talk a little bit about Classical education. Last night was our second co-teacher check-up of the year, and it did not disappoint.

Gathering with so many invested parents is such a huge blessing. We got updates about our Drama and Improv group….spoiler alert: they are working on a bit of Shakespeare for the Spring. We heard about how our Math club is about to get going for our budding mathematicians. Finally, we got to hear from our Head of School, Dusty Kinslow, about upcoming plans for building out our schools of Logic and Rhetoric. What a great night!

We typically assign a little homework for our co-teachers in preparation for training, and last night was no different. They were asked to read through two articles published by the Society for Classical Learning:

Goodness Isn’t Boring: Images of Goodness in Narnia, Linda Dey

“It Is Growing Something”: Rest and the Good Life, Sarah Pfannenschmidt and Michelle Seymour

Each of these articles provided ample material for us to have thought-provoking discussions:

What is goodness?

How do we model that for our children?

How is rest a discipline?

What does school-wide rest look like?

What wonderful sentiments to ponder as we approach what is for many, the busiest time of the year. We wish each of you blessings on the rest of your semester, co-teachers!

The post Co-Teacher Check Up first appeared on Austin Classical School | Austin, TX.

That’s what we were reminded about in Chapel this morning, as we entered into the final month of our school year. Though the finish line is just ahead, we need to remember that we are still called to finish well.

Our Head of School, Mrs. Dusty Kinslow, referenced Colossians 3:23-24 as she encouraged our students to finish well. “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.”

What a great verse to get us through these last few weeks! Our students were also reminded of the principles that we choose to abide by at Austin Classical School. One way we can *all* finish well is to keep these in mind, as we work heartily for the Lord.

Finish well, friends, and keep READing!

We’ve got plants, fish, caterpillars, and as of Monday: baby chicks!

Our 3rd graders became proud parents of almost a dozen chicks this past week, and they couldn’t be more excited. They have been waiting patiently for weeks, and finally got to see their brood arrive.

Keeping in line with our study of the Modern Era, they chose to name these chicks after U.S. Presidents and First Ladies. Eleanor “Ellie” Roosevelt was the first to arrive, proving to be a welcome distraction during a math test.

There’s something captivating about not only watching new life, but watching it through the eyes of a child. Whether it’s the squeal of a Kindergartner as she sees her plant grow its first leaf, or the wonder of a 1st grader watching a fish dart around the aquarium, our students really are experiencing truth, goodness and beauty in their classrooms. The chicks just happen to be the loudest expression of those virtues.
